A Question of Protocol

Postby Baphomet » Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:05 am

Question: I hang out a bit over on Ubuntuforums dot org, like many of us I assume, but I'm always a little hesitant to come right out and blatantly suggest in the public forum downloading Ultimate Edition to users. I'm not sure why, but it seems to me doing so would be... well... rude or something. It's as though by being on the "official" Ubuntu-forums I feel I should be pushing their product (meaning the "official" Ubuntu release) and, in all honesty, for the most part, that's what I do. There are times however when I see a user so frustrated, so angry and ready to just give up and go back to Windows that I can't help myself.

Typically what happens next is that I send that user a PM. In this PM I explain that there is a better way... A distro that is Ubuntu but yet bigger, faster, more powerful; a 'buntu fo' yo ass that will not only solve your problems, but also whiten your whites and brighten your colors, freshen your breath, improve your MPG, rid you of excess pounds AND make you toast with butter and jam every morning without even being asked. It was just such a "conversation" over this weekend that brought this whole issue to a head for me. A semi-new 'buntu user getting frustrated with various problems no one could seem to resolve adequately. I suggested he "bite the bullet" and (yet another) reformat and reinstall... Only this time, installing Ultimate Edition. I got a response this morning from said user:
Everything works perfectly now. I don't get lock ups, I never have video problems.. compiz is running full time, and flash works flawelessly. You were right again.. biting the bullet.. installing Ultimate fixed everything! Thanks again...

Awesome! Another small victory ripped from the jaws of defeat. I invited said user to pop on over to the Ultimate Edition forums to partake of the free beer and snacks, so maybe they'll show up... Either way, though, this is what begs the question.

Is it wrong to preach the Ultimate Edition gospel on the "official" forums? Is it in bad taste? Or am I just being stupid?
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

I don't think this is a problem or unethical in the least. Does not matter which *nix distro one chooses to run. Any additional people/ believers in the *nix world is a benefit to the community. Thats a good story btw. ;)

Well I do put a link to Ultimate Edition in my 'buntu-forums dot org sig-line... Okay, so pimping Ultimate Edition on "those other" forums is kosher; good, good to know. I feel better now. How about threats of physical violence and/or extortion? I also make a lot of outrageous promises no one could possibly keep regarding not only Ultimate Edition but also forum membership; for instance, free car-washes for life. Getting their house repainted... Oh and dancing girls.

That's cool, right?? I'm all good?

Damn...missed the dancing girls too....not too concerned about the car washes but the toast and jam each morning sounds like me....as long as I can get 3 cups of coffee with it !!!

As for the new flash.....I really do think "Flash" will get rid ofthe dancing girls...in my case anyway....they would run away at a great rate of knots screaming...

I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all. I'm sure you have seen me on the Ubuntu boards and I push Ultimate Edition all the time. A lot of us here dual boot so I don't think anyone would have a problem with suggesting another OS. I use both LinuxMint and UM and love them both. Now to figure out how to integrate them into one OS. Yes, I want my cake and eat it to.

I think it is freaking wonderful that you were able to help him!! Nothing wrong with that at ALL. I feel that anytime you can get a winblows user to start and KEEP using Linux it's a good thing.

Hmmmm dancing girls ??? Yah okay I'm game :D
I can be the designated driver for y'all

I think I can safely speak for the entire forum when I say we are positively breathless with anticipation...
