Ubuntu laptop trouble

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Re: Ubuntu laptop trouble

Postby Plesetsk » Mon Mar 03, 2008 12:47 pm

Hello!
I need help with installing Ultimate Edition 1.7 on my asus f3ka ( CPU AMD turion 64x2; graphics ATI Mobility radeon HD2600). The trouble is that i have the black blank screen while booting from live DVD - x server does not starts. i suppose that it is the trouble with my video card, but in the "grapics safe mode" i have the same problem.
while booting i have messages:

pidof [3857]: can t read sid from /proc/.../...

when i'm trying startx =>

Fatal server error:
no screens found
XI0: fatal I0 error 104 (Connect reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Wish your help...

i have alot of experience w/ ati jus not this card in particular.

when it boots try this in shell

Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

when it asks for video driver choose "vesa"

accept the defaults for everything else. when it gets to monitor ONLY sellect those resolutions you know for a fact your monitor supports. an x means its selected. use spacebar to select and deselct. then it will ask about sync rates. choose advanced so it will auto detect them. accept the defaults through the rest of the reconfig prog. now do the following

Code: Select all
sudo gdm stop

Code: Select all
sudo gdm start

let me kno if this helps.

p.s. if this works you may have to do the same thing again after it is installed. with a few slight modifcations

first you would have to login using your username. reconfig command remains the same. however to start gdm you would do the following

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

glad that fixed it for you. now you will be using a "generic" video driver so you wont have any acceleration and the eye candy wont work. however you can use envy to install the accelerated (fglrx) driver or you can use my howto that is posted in the howto section of the forum.

note the howto is out dated by about a moth or 2.

Ok, I tried envy and it gives me more resolutions, but not anything larger than 800x640. I'm gonna try editing the xorg.conf file and setting up some extra resolutions myself. That I think may just do it. I have another question also, anybody know how to get a wireless card to work in Ultimate? My laptop has one built in and Ultimate won't recognize it.
Thanks

That indicates you didnt go to the correct file.

Make sure you open with 'sudo'

so
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

This will open GEdit in the correct xorg.conf file.

Can I recommend running a backup before changing anything major just in case, you just never know lol

I did a copy and paste with my eyes and it still has nothing in it. Which is kinda strange since that is a main file! I did manage to get the screen to go to a higher resolution and it's working now. I just kept playing with alot of settings and I actually remember how I did it! Now anyway to get my wireless card to be enabled?

i must admit, that's unusual for the xorg.conf file to be totally blank. but it must be there for your Xwindows to read it.

As for your wireless, you mentioned its a 802.11g WLAN...is this built in or USB?

This happens when you aren't in the correct directory for the xorg.conf file. in other words somehow you were trying to edit something that didn't exist, so it created one (named .. you guessed it, xorg.conf!). Are you sure you tried to edit the right file? Try again with this:
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz 45nm/Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R M.B. w/ddr3 1333
G.Skill 2X1GB DDR3 1333MHz/Gigabyte 8800GT PCIe 2.0 512MB GDDR3 OC'd to 700Mhz/ WD160 gig, 2- WD250 gig in RAID-0 (500GB), WD640 gig e-SATA external

AMD 64 X2 3800+/ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe/G.Skill 2X1GB Matched Pair ddr400
/EVGA 6800GS Nvidia Graphics 256MB/WD160gig drive

HTPC Box:AMD 64 X2 4400+/ BIOSTAR TF7050PV HDMI MicroATX/G.Skill 2X1GB /Matched Pair DDR800/Integrated video and audio/WD160gig drive
