Ubuntu laptop trouble

Postby Theo9909 » Sat Mar 01, 2008 1:15 am

Hey everyone! I'm a noob at this and am trying to get my laptop to run ultimate 1.6 gamers. I have a new HP DV9720us laptop and it won't take the install. I tried a couple times and it ends up giving me a blank screen. The laptop specs are as follows

Amd Turion 64 X2 2.0ghz
Nvidia graphics MCP67M
2 gigs memory
150 gig hard drive
17 inch Generic display

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! thank you!!

So a few questions for you...
Are you successful at running a live session from the DVD?
Are you able to start the install process?
Does it say that it is installing to the drive?
When are you getting a blank screen?
Is the blank screen black or white?

To answer your questions, at first, it wouldn't even run the live dvd. After trying a couple times I used the low graphics safe mode and got it to run and install. It's working decently right now, I just have to fix the resolution as I am stuck at 800 by 600. Just so happens that is not my favorite resolution. Any help with fixing resolution problems?

open up a terminal window and enter:
Code: Select all
envy -t

Run envy, and install nvidia drivers for your laptop ;) Then you can change the resolution from within the Nvidia control manager (Accessories>>System Tools>>Nvidia settings) Let me know how that works out for ya.

I tried running envy. It came back with an error saying that it could not identify my video card. I could continue at my own risk, but I haven't attempted that yet. Is it suggested I do it manually or is there another way that I could change my resolution settings? Thanks for your help!

Couple different ways:
Try using the Change Resolution tool found in the System>>Preferences>>Change Resolution

You could also just go in and change it in your xorg.conf file.
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

When your in there find your resolution settings and change them to something like 1024x768 and click save. See the screenshot for an example:
Screenshot-xorg.conf (-etc-X11) - gedit.png
Hope this helps.

LOL I'm not that much of a noob that I don;t know where to change my screen resolution. I attempted to change the resolution settings in the xorg.conf file but it didn't take. I want to be able to get compiz to work also. I just need to figure out how to get Ultimate to recognize my laptops monitor type and the graphics card. the card is nvidia so I didn't think I would have a problem.

Hello. you can after all the downloads and upgrade you can use Hardware Drivers located jn System>Administration, it will probably download Nvidia glx-new
As for the changing of Screen Resolution go to System>Preference...scroll down to the bottom or near. You probably not seeing it with that kind of resolution but it's there///and welcome to Ultimate Edition... ;)

If it was me I'd use Envy.
Envy's manual install, is only manual so far as it lets you pick which driver you want installed,
Everything else is automated.
Select the highest # driver
I think the current version is 169.09 for the "Nvidia New" class,
which is your card's driver classification.
