Welcome to the forum djabhi:
And welcome to Linux.
Once you get your video drivers installed you're over the steepest part of the Linux learning curve.
Several users have had problems getting the 8xxx class video cards detected.
I'm assuming you are using Envy to install your drivers
i have to use the display of my motherboard to use Ultimate edition n GUI mode
It's important to disable the onboard video in the bios before installing your video drivers.
Even if the 8800 GT drivers are installed correctly, if Linux sees your onboard video first
it will presume xorg is configured wrong and will not start your GUI.
(it would be best to print this, to use while you are going through these steps)
first step is to get you to your desktop on your 8800.
On reboot, Esc at first sign of Grub,
This will bring you to the Grub menu.
Select "recovery mode"
once every thing has loaded and you are at the prompt
- Code: Select all
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Enter
This will bring you to the reconfigure GUI
your mouse won't work, use the arrows on your keyboard to navigate, and the space bar to select.
yes auto detect my card.
If it can't detect your card select nvidia or nv for the driver.
answer several questions (when in doubt, the default answer is best)
yes write changes to xorg.conf
in the monitor section...
yes detect my monitor
only select resolutions your monitor will support
the highest resolution you select will be the default resolution,
so unless you have a magnifying glass, select something you can read.
When reconfigure is done, to restart desktop GUI
- Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
or
- Code: Select all
reboot now
If for some reason this gives you a black screen
do over, selecting a different driver
ENVYonce you're at your desktop, step 2 installing your nvidia drivers...
make sure you're hooked up to the net
Applications/System tools/Envy
select "install the Nvidia driver"
If it can't detect your card
select "install the Nvidia driver manually"
Select "version 169.09" (this is the driver you want, the "Nvidia New" class)
let Envy do it's thing
yes write the changes to xorg.conf
when done, reboot
If you get a black screen,
reconfigure xorg again and post back in the 1.7 section,
it will get much more attention and will get you much more help, quicker.
If this solves your video problems,
please post back to this thread and tell us it's solved, so others with this card will see a solution.
