Rather than reinvent the wheel, here's the url of the thread where I list the steps to boot to your Ultimate 1.7 disk and reconfigure grub:

OK, so you need to boot TO the USB? Are you trying to install to that drive and then boot up with it? And you don't have a DVD to install from? Is that the scenario?

If so, then perhaps this would be of help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

I would highly recommend investing 5 bucks in a DVD rom drive which can be obtained at a used computer store or borrow one from a friend for a day. Now keep in mind it will only play DVD discs(not cds). If you have 30 bucks you can purchase a new dvd-rw(LG make a good one) which can read and write both dvds and cds. Editing the grub boot loader is very tricky. Once you have the disc drive installed, move all your keepsakes to a usb drive and then re-install ultimate. I personnally try to avoid boot loaders. I have messed up way too many to mention. It faster to just re-install the operating system from stratch. Good Luck!! pch

pch is correct and there is another avenue to go ..download Hardy 8.4..a CD..fast also and use Ultamatix to get a close or clone of Ultimate 1.8... http://ultamatix.com/ if I am not mistaken when you install Ultamatix, it also updates your sources list from Ultimate...use the middle download on the bottom of the page in Ultamatix..it is a Deb file and should install in Ubuntu quite nicely..themes and the looks are all available from it ;)

That is not correct. DVD-ROM drives will read both DVD's and CD's.

Thrift Stores are also excellent sources for (really!) cheap, cast-off, PC's. Buy the PC for $10, rip out the drive, recycle or redonate the remaining "shell".
