installing internet explorer with wine

Postby dragonfly » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:32 am

I tried installing internet explorer with wine and everything seems to happen the way it is supposed to happen. I get the icon on the desktop, but when I click on the icon nothing happens.

dragonfly, to some extent join the club. i have noticed the same issue. i have to watch some vids for my studies and it only works on IE6 and i thought that wine would be the answer to my prayers! maybe wine needs to be looked at and some issues need to be addressed. dont feel too alone im sure there are others with the same problem.

Ya, the version of IE6 is pretty screwed up with Wine (that I've noticed). I can get you by in a jam ... but not a jelly.

Hi everyone, thanks for the sympathy. I only need internet explorer because my service provider will only chat with me on internet explorer, otherwise I could care less about it.
It would be interesting to know the problem tho.

By "chat with me", do you mean by utilizing an instant messenger application? Or do they somehow "chat" with you using some other application? Reason I ask, is cause I use aMSN for my IM'ing and can chat with everybody using a msn messenger or yahoo messenger. Also, I believe that pigeon does the same as well.

Hi daddy, my internet, TV, and phone, are all provided by the same company. When I call them on the phone about anything (my bill etc) I usually get someone I don't understand. I also have a hearing problem which compounds the problem. Before I switched to ubuntu I could go to internet explorer and contact them on line and sort out any problems over the internet. My provider has a notice on their web site that states I need internet explorer to contact a rep. Therein lies my problem. It is the only time I would use it, but to me it is important. I hope that explains your question. thanks for any help you can give me.

Well, I see your need for it now. Unfortunately I can't really help you too much in this department. I don't even have it installed anymore. But when I did, it was using Ultimate Edition 1.6/ Gusty Gibbon based. I just googled and found a how-to on the subject and followed directions .... everything worked out ok, but IE was pretty weak and had quite a few bugs. It worked and I got done what I needed to get done, but thats it. Here are a link to get you started with re-installation (only solution I can come up with):

Hi everyone, well I gave it my best shot as an inexperienced linux user and could not get internet explorer to install,so I did what I vowed to never do again I reinstalled WINDOWS XP. Don't get upset!, because I partitioned my computer and put WINDOWS XP in the smallest partition I could make and still have it work. I now have internet explorer back for the necessary contacts I need to make, but I will not give up my Ubuntu OS which uses the rest of the computer space. I will say this--- using a linux system is very educational and I never thought i would be able to manipulate a computer like I have been doing. It took me all day to figure out how to do it, but WOW I did it. I will be watching the forums to see if anyone figures out how to install internet explorer on ubuntu and then it's goodbye Windows XP

Hi daddy, yes I tried the site howtoforge and after all the installing sources were done I got this message
"bash: ./ies4linux: No such file or directory", thats when I threw my hands up and surrendered LOL.. I see now that there is now a new version Ubuntu 1.9, maybe I'll wait and until I can download it and try again. Meanwhile I'll stick with what I've got, and many thanks for all your help, even if something doesn't work it's still a learning experience
