That's a built in wireless card with a nice little on/off switch on the front of the laptop. I keep it on

I should have seen it, sorry, I kinda dumb and didnt notice you mentioned it earlier sorry.

I'm not too over familiar with wireless cards on here, mine seems to just work out of the box, now I only know that Suse can use ndiswrapper but I couldn't tell you if Ubuntu uses the same. Hopefully someone with more info will be able to help with that.

As for the xorg.conf file...theres two things you might try.

Firstly, like the admin said a minute ago ensure your in /ETC/X11/...copy and paste exactly
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
if its still blank maybe it might be worth typing
Code: Select all
cd /etc/X11
followed by
Code: Select all
dir
and see if the file is under a slightly different name that you might have mistakenly changed name other wise try clicking on Places>Search for Files, type xorg.conf and search the filesystem

are you sure didnt do x11 instead of X11? ive made that same mistake a few times myself. has to be a capital X. just a thought.

Turns out I was using a lower-case "x". I went back and looked at that file and it had a ton of resolutions available. All the visual stuff is working. Any idea on how to get my wireless card to work?

i thought was the problem. is you use lowercase it actually makes a new file under that directory once you save it. of course it wouldnt do anything because xorg is looking in a different place.

im not sure about the wireless. i have no experiens there. ive heard you can use something called ndiswrapper. basically lets you use the windows drivers. i have no clue how to use it. perhaps someone can chime in and give you a hand there. if your in a hurry you may find relevent info over at ubuntuforums.org.

Do a search in this forum for some of phaedra or pheadra 's posts, our local expert on this subject. I know she's delt with this many times over, right here in the forum.

I don't know if this is useful or not but if you open Synaptic and search for ndiswrapper it lists 3 files all for ndiswrapper. I used it before on Suse and works a charm.

Sometimes your wifi card is a pain and not recognised and ndiswrapper uses the windows driver to make it available for use. check it out. I would presume that its available on Ubuntu too

I have used ndiswrapper before on my last laptop when I tried Linspire when they were giving it away. There was some tweaking and command line work that had to be done which I can't remember.

I can't remember your specs as I write this. What is your wireless?

If you have to use the ndiswrapper I am sure if your do a search on it and your particular wireless card on here or on the ubuntu forums you should run into an answer for your issue.

If you can tell me your wireless card perhaps I can help

My wireless card is an Ahteros 5007 series. Ultimate detects it and has a restricted driver installed for it. Though it's not turned on cause the HP Software that detects the switch on the laptop isn't available for linux. I thought I found something that was said to work a few weeks ago, but haven't found it since. The HP program is HP WLAN Assistant
