While you're not out of the woods yet, most of the frustration is behind you.
A lot of us have to "play" with our video drivers to get them to work properly,
( as you probably noticed from your last Gutsy install )
but it gets easier every time. A learning curve thing.
Unlike windows there is a sequence to follow.
1) install OS
2) install flash & adobe plug-ins
3) Update ( hit the update icon on desktop an go away for several hours )
*note* if update appears stuck... move windows around to see if update is waiting on a responce from you.
4) Reboot
5) Install video drivers
Video drivers come dead-last for a reason...
an update will bork your video drivers and you will have to do them over again anyway.
A nice Ati how-to here

Since I run nvidia an know less than nothing about Ati, I'm worthless for help.
Since you had gutsy you probably know this.
BUT... to get your desktop back,
Esc at Grub

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
follow instructions
yes automaticaly reconfigure xorg.conf
select highest resolution you want for default
when complete reboot and you should have your desktop back
"drama1981" is our resident Ati god and will most likely be a great help as soon as he reads your last post.
