A simple question

Postby vinca » Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:16 pm

I have ati radeon x1600 graphics

I have installed the drivers using drama's fglrx howto

any video I play seems to be flickery, and I have to switch into medacity

Is it possible to fix this without changing to nvidia?

kuz it's kinda cool to be able to play video in compiz if you know what i mean... ;)

otherwise i'll deal with medacity --replace

ok btw visuializations in amaroK are fine

thought about an upgraded card for graphics? Other than that ... I'm not an ATI guy. I'm sure eventually I will be, cause thats where AMD is. My next board/ CPU / graphics will prob. be based on the AM2+ chipset with Crossfire. But till then .... sorry :( Not much help here.

I'll take a stab at it since all I use to use was ATI back in the day ;) But what I'm about to recommend applies across the board. Make sure of what the resolution and refresh rates are for your monitor. Then you can check what the refresh rate is set at on your system and if you can increase to something your monitor can handle, then that may help to get rid of the flickering IF the flicker you're talking about is what I'm thinking of. But it all has to be something that your monitor is capable of or when you go to apply the changes you'll get the black screen that says your montior can't handle it. In that case, and what worked for me, was to hit the Esc key and cancel the change. Hope this helps. First thing that pop in my mind about your problem tho'.

Looking at the specs and settings for your model, I'd say it's prolly already set to 60, which is max at that display mode (nice monitor btw). Sorry couldn't help ya. Only other thing I can think of would be the drivers. I know you said you liked the set your using, but sometimes to get optimal results you have to go back to brand drivers to get proper operation. Anyway, good luck and hope you get it resolved.

if you want to see if it's your driver or an issue with compiz...
kill any compiz and 3D effects, and in a terminal
Code: Select all
glxgears

in another window you will see 3 gears turning.
don't move your mouse, let it run for 25-30 seconds.
compare the 5 or 6 lines in the terminal with the benchmarks in the Hardware Section.

If your benchmarks look similar to the cards on the same level as yours, I would say your driver is prolly not the issue.

Since Drama1981 is the resident Ati guru his word has the final say-so.

Re: A simple question

i know your box is down but i thought i would post my feelings on this issue. first you do know that howto is outdated by a few releases right? i havent had a chance to update it. both my boxes where down for the longest time. back up now. but i decided to wait until the latest driver gets released (come out monthly) to update it (should be coming very soon) i hope to update it this weekend. im still on the same version that howto pertains to though.

as far as the flickering goes your doing much better than i ever have. ive always ended up with black video until i shut compiz down. there are lots of fixes out there. even a patched version of mplayer. nothing has worked for me. ive been looking for a workaround that actually works going on 6 months now. and ill keep looking until i find one. it seems at the present time though the only solution is to shut down compiz when we need to watch a video. the strange thing tho is flash videos work fine. but they are the only ones.

ill keep looking tho and if i find something ill let you and all the rest of our forum members know.

cheers <BREW>

-drama

p.s. sorry i dont have a solution to the issue. i know its a pain to have to shut down compiz to watch a video but thats our only choice.
