Help and support for Ultimate Edition 3.8

No Compiz

Postby Acaster » Tue Feb 25, 2014 11:59 pm

Compiz doesn't run on this installation of 3.8 although it's fine on others. compiz --replace is set in start up applications and when I enter it into a terminal this happens

Code: Select all

Which desktop environment are you using. Compiz as a standalone is almost dead. Adding compiz is externalized in Ultimate Edition by Theemahn.
Make sure you have functional graphics drivers(AMD/Nvidia). IF you are using Intel, no need to worry.

Is weird because am not seeing any failure in that list. Just curious if you have ever tried to start compiz naturally, for instance not having the compiz --replace issued command to start off with??? Just am wondering as usually every time I have seen a failure with compiz was because something was not able to be composited(drawn) properly. Making my massive mistakes on themes at times, has produced errors of such! Also have seen others that indicated something did not install properly! Just am curious as because somewhere along the line, to me is almost sounding as if there is some double issued command which will trip the terminal in many instances! I am quite guilty of that also!!!

Please see my signature for machine specs. I used Mate on 3.8 and it's ok on my AMD PC but not any of the intels. Thing is compiz is ok on all the operating systems in my signature except this one.

Graphics card is not listed and your mainboard does not have any IGP....
Whichever card you are using make sure you download the correct drivers.
For AMD there is an alternative method to install drivers.

It's a Radeon HD 5450 diamond edition and I got the drivers from the amd site.

Used to fix this problem by changing the window manager in the drop down menu but that hasn't appeared in this version. How can I find out / change the window manager without it?

Assuming you are using the mate desktop...
From the looks of it you dont seem to be having the fusion-icon(the blue compiz icon) up top in the panel.
You could type: ALT+F2 and type: fusion-icon

If nothing comes up you could install it....
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install fusion-icon

If you are still unable to change to compiz....then you are pretty much out of luck. :|

I loved Compiz, note the past tense. I think from what I can tell, it's kinda dead in the newer Ubuntus. Hopefully someone will get screen effects woirking in 13.10 and beyound

ALT+F2 doesn't do anything here but I tried fusion-icon in a terminal and got 'command not found' and synaptic said it wasn't installed so I followed your instructions and now I get this:

acaster@HP:~$ fusion-icon
* Detected Session: mate
* Searching for installed applications...
Segmentation fault
acaster@HP:~$

Is this it? Is this the end of compiz? I know I live in an isolated corner of the globe where the rest of it can pass me by and it isn't something I lose sleep over either but no more compiz? It didn't do much but it was sure good to have around.

Change just ain't what it used to be.

Then that's it. I'll repeat, Compiz as a standalone is dead. Nonetheless the code is being used natively on E17, cinnamon, kde and gnome-shell.
All the above DE have variations in the effects they use compared to compiz.
Unless TheeMahn has the time or plans to somehow mesh in Compiz at a deeper level in Ultimate Edition, compiz may be unusable.

KDE(kwin) by far has all the effects of compiz....wobbly windows, desktop cube etc etc.

Mate has a compositor that does nothing more than add shadows to windows.

A lightweight highly configurable and powerful compositor is --- compton.
Compton is a derivative of xcompmgr.

Compton allow for transparency of windows, colored shadows to windows, fading of windows and minimize effects.

You will need to put off the default mate compositor if you want to use compton on mate/xfce.

Once you install compton....I can give you the configuration file....that's if you want to use it.
