Backup your home folder on a real hard disk partition.
You might loose all your desktop settings..but everything else is stored in your home.

Use gparted or gnome-disks to create a new partition on your existing drive and then copy the entire /home folder onto the partition...thereby creating a separate /home partition. This way you never loose your data.

Yes, its easy to do so. Changing your entire OS without touching your /home partition.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/278160/u ... ing-ubuntu

You can do this even after you finish installing a new OS provided you already have a /home partition....you just need to map it and make an entry to /etc/fstab...

NOTE: IF you are new to this(doing it for the first time) make sure your /home partition is empty or you have made a backup of it before proceeding.
