Unable to print (via USb & Network)

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 3.8

Unable to print (via USb & Network)

Postby AdiosXP » Wed Dec 18, 2013 5:30 pm

Greetings all --

My topic appears to be related to this post as well. I am testing printing from within UE3.8 via a USB-connected HP Deskjet (ancient model), and a LAN-attached HP-Jetdirect print server (installed in an HP4000n Laserjet). This print configuration works just fine under Mint16, Kubuntu13.10, Pinguy13.10Beta etc. -- alas, CUPS seems ot be broken. Suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

Make sure the CUPS printer and client are same version.

Thank you for that link! Alas, this doesn't address MY problem: since I have not tweaked UE3.8 in any way (default install from DVD), the problem's cause must lie deeper, imho ...

SYNAPTICS shows the following versions:
cups ... 1.6.2-1ubuntu5 ... Note: not installed
(same version for cups-client, -common, -daemon) ... Note: not installed
hplip-cups & printer-driver-hpcups ... 3.13.3-1ubuntu0.1 ... Note: not installed

Installation of cups utterly fails, and so does printer discovery due to "Printing service not available. Start this service on this computer or connect to another server." Attempting to start this service fails due to "Service framework not available". My take: Linux' printing-subsytem (by whatever monicker it goes) is either not installed, incomplete, or broken.

For me, this is (sadly) a show stopper. Question: did this get beta-tested, and if it passed, what changed between the beta and final release?

Can you access CUPS from your web browser?

I found this doc: http://lewiscollard.com/linux/hp-laserjet-4000-ubuntu/

You say printer detection fails. So get that working first...

Install the correct driver for your printer: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... eries.html

Here is a very simple cups howto: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/cups.html

Once again, thanks for providing those links ... Now, my update:

1) via FF26 (as bundled in UE3.8), i was able to connect to my printer's ethernet card (HP-Jetdirect print server Model J3113A). However, I had to enable the "IcedTea" plugin first. Then the server's "Home" page displayed (as it should), and then I could access all tabs in the print-server's "Admin" panel. Note: this lan-attached printer works just fine (for years, I must add!) for my 4 WinXP systems.

2) when attempting to install the hplip-cups & printer-driver-hpcups via Synaptics, the install failed on "broken packages" (as it did before). Yhen when trying to "fix" whatever is deemed "broken" nothing shows up.

So we've come full circle: until cups' installation is fixed (listed as NOT installed), which requires the underlying system-service to operate properly (attempting to start the service fails as well), we're not making much progress re the printing facilities (btw: a core requirement of many business networks).

Upshot: among the 15+ distro's i've tested so far, and of the 5 distros I have currently installed on my multi-boot test system, UE3.8 is the ONLY distro that has this problem. Funny thing: they all pull from the SAME ubuntu repos ...

Sincre thank you for all your help!

Well, its been a month since i reported this issue. In the meantime, i've tested the various editions of Linux Mint 16 (Mate, Cinnamon, KDE, XFCE) which "discovered" flawlessly my printer's JetDirect print server card (Model J3113A, manufactured about 2000 AD) wired to my Westell7500. Driver installation worked just dandy. As much as I like the entire UE3.8 package, "non-printing" is not an option for me: i have many .pdf-type forms/docs to print routinely.

With all due respect for your excellent work & toil, shall i just brick this install and wait for UE3.9 or 4.0 hoping that this problem simply "will repair itself"?
