Greetings,

I downloaded and validated the hash on the 3.6 x64 iso and have been able to run the live boot from a variety of media (YUMI boot drve, Startup Disc Creator drive, CD-ROM). I have been unable to install the operating system using a variety of options (straight from the boot menu, from within the running live boot, various slections of "download updates" and "install third-party software"). Each time I have attempted an install the installer appears to die at the "Preparing to install Ultimate" screen. Conky shows 2% or less CPU utilization, System Monitor shows all processes sleeping with 0% CPU load.

My last attempt, I manually quit the install 5 minutes after clicking continue from the "Preparing to install" dialogue. I saved out the /var/log/syslog file and have pasted the contents below (would have attached the file but this message board does not allow me to do this). Hoping someone can point me in the right direction to get through the install.

Thank you, I will give this a try. I also found that my last attempt corrupted my boot sector which I was able to recover from a backup. I have three OS's configured with GRUB. Will the 3.6 installer allow me to choose the partition to use during the install?

Well, the problem persists. I booted from a USB drive and chose the safe graphics mode. Once there, I added 8 CPU monitors to my task bar and set all eight cores to performance. It is now an hour since I began the install and there has been negligible drive activity nor has there been network activity (I chose to update packages during the install. The 'preparing to install Ubuntu' dialog is still on the screen and the pointer is the spinning globe when this dialog is active.

I have a rather stout laptop and have not experienced this kind of problem when installing Ultimate Edition 3.2 - 3.5.1, although 3.5.2 resulted in nothing but kernel panics during boot. Seems something is incompatible between my hardware and this build but I am not skilled enough with Linux to isolate the problem.

Same result, same results in /var/log/syslog. I think the key indicators are that there is simply no disk activity nor cpu activity after initiating the install. Same results from running install from the boot menu or within the live boot operating environment.

I have already validated the hash to be correct. I pulled the ISO from both Sourceforge and Copy. The ISO from Sourceforge was corrupt but the one form Copy cerified. I may tail the /var/log/dmesg if I re-attempt install but this has already been too time cosuming. Again, thanks for your input. No further comment is necessary.

I have tried downloading from Copy. 3.6 full and 3.6 lite both 64 and 32 bit. None work correctly. I've tried several different download sites from Sourceforge and kept getting bad MD5's. Finally got a 3.6 lite properly downloaded with correct MD5 and got it to boot but then there is no visible cursor. I know the cursor is working because I can use Tab and see various buttons lite up but that makes it really difficult to play with. I am about to give up on Ultimate. After all these years. It's just getting too frustrating. For me anyway. Well, sorry, I'm being bitchy. I'll probably keep trying and checking the forums. Thanks for all you suggestions and help though. For the time being I'm using Mint.

The installation proceeded past that point on one occasion and one only, and I can't get it to repeat, but the problems I got after that are in my thread 'Not All There'
