Running Steam??

I am totally new to steam. If it wasn't for the advertisement of it on the Ubuntu software center, I would still have no clue to it's existence. Soooo, with that said... I downloaded Steam and all seems to work fine, until I click on a game. It shows the screen for the game, but doesn't load and isn't pulling on my internet connection at that point. It won't even let me scroll down the page cause it hasn't loaded. I've let it sit and watched my data for 5 minutes with no activity. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks. :D

You have setup your account? Bought a game? Downloaded the game? Or is that the issue, when you click on a game from the store?

Account is all set up. It's when I click on a game. I was gonna try one of the 2 available free ones first to check it out. I click on the game and it goes to that screen, but that screen doesn't load fully. I can still click on other options, but won't even scroll down. If I go into full screen, it goes black and plays music

Okay, first make sure you have the most up to date version of Steam. (from the website)
Then start steam with this:
Code: Select all
steam -ddd

Then start a game. Look at the output in the terminal, that should point you in the right direction.

The terminal output

Running Steam on ubuntu 12.04 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
When I hit enter after typing in steam -ddd into terminal, the steam screen returns to the startup screen

I would reinstall with a .deb from their website.

your not using an optimus laptop are you? I was having the same issue as you a few minutes ago with Portal Beta. I had to run steam with primus.

No, I'm using an HP m7277c PC tower with 3GB DDR2 RAM, a 3.00GHz dual core Processor and a Geforce 210 silent with 1GB running to my VGA monitor. I haven't had a chance to download the deb from their site yet.
