Compiling 3.7.1 for Ultimate Edition 3.5

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Wed Dec 26, 2012 12:56 am

Well it's a mainline release from kernel org, so that means generally is no hassles and good to go! Have read that part for a bit! Am starting to learn that there are differences in how these kernels are compiled! Am also understanding is quite a time consuming task to put it together into a deb format! 1st compile is something would rather not talk about! I blew it big time! Poor article I read! Found better instructions and ran make oldconfig this time so should follow the correct pattern this time! Started compiling it a 7:30 this evening and is still going at 10:30! Did it on a clean install on Vbox so it should follow everything that is originally in the system, so guess will take time! If it works should be much more compatible with our systems than the regular chopped ubuntu versions! Have to realize most don't run as many programs and things that are included in Ultimate!

I came upon one site that said there was documentation in the system, but where the person said to look was not there! If anyone knows where it is would greatly appreciate it!!!! It is one huge mix of files in Ultimate, can get lost in it for days!!! Not real sure what I am going to do for the compiler as is hooked to so many files would be easier to build from scratch! Of course that is next for me to build my own, but I expect that to take some time! Least have 3.5 to try and redo with all the updates which is giving me a great insight for when I decide to give it a go! Just am hoping I can find some way to start putting it together in Virtualbox. My poor memory for commands and the amount that have to be done for assembly, you better believe I want that PDF in front of me! Once again if someone could point me in a good direction for that one would be great!

If this 3.7.1 turns out good will let you all know, if you have a place to upload it to, I will do it! Also will lead to the eventual update of 3.5 and once again provided all past my tests and are worthy will gladly upload for users to enjoy! Thanks again for any info is really helping a lot and still enjoying this! No other place or OS would help me learn this much, will be awesome to give back for all that has been given to me here!!!!

Man pages
Code: Select all

Is going to be very useful!!! Had no idea of those commands! Initial testing shows is a flop! 2nd shot and is nothing but 2 files of junk that claim files are missing! So try number 2 is junk again! Forgot about the video memory settings had that real low(default vbox) I guess I just am not getting the right information to do this correctly! Will check some more spots online! Took from 7:25 last night til 11:30 and the result is wasted time! Sure wish it would have worked! Took me a half hour fighting with command line just to get it to start! Only made two debs one at 8megs and other at 40megs. Was complaining about not enough space. Was on a fresh install of Ultimate with 41 gigs of space(total) but thought it would only need about 30? Wish I could get better information on this all!!!! Am very bummed professionals such as Official Wiki's/Sites by Ubuntu and Debian are just not listing all the information needed to accomplish this! Maybe have to go straight to Linus, after all he did come up with Linux to begin with! Just a real drag as the whole process carries on and on for all those hours never booing or hooing just making complete trash that is useless!!! Believe that system is flawed! Should have something that stops halfway or whatever and says "Nope, No can do you didn't enter settings right!" Or something would be nice!!! Am quite tipped at that aspect! Would rather have it spitting out something referring that is no good! Am going to start with what you have listed to see if I can get to the bottom of this! I am not a quitter!!! I will not stop until I succeed even if it takes the rest of my life!!!!! Thanks big time for those commands am sure is going to be a great start!!! Also have downloaded what TheeMahn put up in my little post to commend him! He is one awesome person!!! Am in total amazement of his knowledge and am very very repulsed anyone would ever deny him any space on a site! They should be ashamed of themselves for such poor judgement!!!! Is pathetic to enter sites with poor information, when great information is being lost from such decisions!!!! Gets me more tipped than my failure!!!!! Well am back to it to try, try again!!! Thanks once again, you're awesome Pam!!!

Figured as much, but really thanks for reminding me! Do forget at times. Problem am finding is even within the constraints of Ubuntu Builder(UB), when trying to build this kernel, it wants to use my machine's config! Very upsetting!!! As have learned my machine's configuration is not entirely valid no more as there are differences. Not drastic but are still there! Also my intention is to make the kernel to the specifications of the operating system! Just upgrading and updating Ultimate for all of us! If I wanted to create something entirely for my machine only, is not a big problem at all! Not sure if you are familiar with Ubuntu Builder? Will just explain a bit and hope it doesn't tip you off at all!! Anyway when you click on File System in your window directory, then click home Ubuntu Builder is located right there to the right of root and to the left of that is your home folder, of course in my case(bob). Now UB when it extracts from the ISO image it lays 3 folders configs, File System and ISO. I extracted the kernel into File System(in its own folder) While using chroot in UB I issue the command to copy the config from the File System in UB. Nope it jumps out of File System and UB and goes two folders over to my system!!!! So I am looking for some option/ script to force it to use the operating systems specs and not mine! Gets me a little tipped and is on the crazy side! It is almost like someone saying come over to my house it's right here and they give you directions that show it's 2 blocks away! Instead those directions are ignored and you go 10 miles away insisting that is the right place!!!!! I guess I was stupid to think using UB would isolate the Distribution from my own system! Is a severe lack of knowledge on my part, is for sure! So for now have hit a brick wall!!! Will eventually break through but is going to take help!!! Least now I know why the debs I produced are not 100% effective! All along has been jumping out of the box!!!! Well really do appreciate all the links and advice and continually hope you don't get upset with my lack of knowledge!!! Just have a little java under my belt, scripting is not quite there yet!!!! Is still one of the most exciting adventures I have ever been on!!!! My ole lady thinks I am nuts for all the time I spend on this stuff, but I really enjoy it!!! Always did like mysteries, sci-fi and things that are not easily done!!!! What's really strange is computers brought us together! I used to fix hers when we worked together!!! Now I just build her a new one when it dumps!!! Anyway lost a bit a time yesterday(Siesta Cierra) so it cuts into today and will loose a bit of time to research further!!! If you have any clues, really would appreciate it!!!!! Also thanks for everything to date! Love it here!!!!

Maybe sometimes the solution is easier than getting so complicated? Default is to look in arch folder, so just copied the configuration to that! As said not good at scripting, muff the words and syllables sometimes! Got headers and image making right now. Not sure on what to do for initrd image link or vmlinuz link in the distro. Broken right now and nothing for boot! Is a complicated deal! Hoping for a success in the next few days as am getting some quirks here from all the things have done! Will be the first victim to test this anyway!!! Still might have to look up some of these changes on the kernel as still have to enter on these new settings! Not fun! Just hope the result will be worth it! The exton one am running is good, but all the dumb stuff I did with trying to get Gnome extensions to work and trying to install that AMD folger's coffee driver!(lol have to make fun of fglrx!) muffed some things up so getting some scrappy video things happening and had a couple crashes this morning!!! NOTE TO OTHERS! Don't try this at home!!!! If it all flops will just try this Novo Builder have read a little about! Is still enjoyable as am continually learning! Eventually will be able to help others, when I know exactly what I am doing!!!! Took a break yesterday after chores as needed to cool down so wouldn't make faulty decisions! More firm and precise today! Will be reloading on VBOX to test the headers and image when is done. Hopefully will find a way to fix the other pieces for the ISO soon! If not least headers and image should be good!!!!

Hey BBosak2143

the other day i was digging around for drivers at AMD website and hunted for a ati radeon 3000...

it figures further support for that gpu is null.......only the major 12.6 is supposed to work with all cards stably including newer trinity crossfire or unless amd
further announces a revolutionary driver...

I highly recommend you use amdccc 12.6 from their website instead of any newer drivers for optimal stability.
The search results yielded this for your card..........

just a note as i have not read the whole thread.

this may have been mentioned but 3.7 kernel doesn't play well with the Propriety AMD graphics drivers

even the current beta 12.11 drivers need to be patched

i couldnt get the stable 12.10 drivers working.

i've just installed Xubuntu 12.10 to play around with, upgraded to 3.7 liquorix kernel.

hense me mentioning this.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2074962 post number 3

just replace "raring" with quantal / whatever you're running.
you need to register to download the patch files.
