Excluding kernel didn't work still wants to update!

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Tue Dec 18, 2012 9:21 am

Thought I was free and clear of 3.2 as I did everything per instruction, but today updates popped up and found out was trying to update to a newer 3.2. Don't want to go back there! Something just not so right with that kernel! Am happy as a lark on 3.7 as no longer have to worry about compiz and tasbars not showing, coming out half way or other strange things on boot. Nice not to have to shut compiz off and leave it going all the time! Is more precise and machine like, sort of like I have described the workings of Haiku. It seems to no longer matter whether a flashdrive is in, cd or anything, just keeps booting to the desktop very precise and in sync. Never observed that on the 3.2 kernel, seemed a bit out of balance. At times would come in one process would be first. Next time another would be first. Now comes in the same order each time. File manager, Unity then taskbars. Everything laid out right and ready to go! Still betting Linus has been running Ultimate and knew what had to be done! I mean this is the only problem I have ever witnessed in Ultimate, with the desktop having troubles loading when compiz is on. Now that is gone! Must be some separation in processes that is definitely an asset to Ultimate! This is why I say TheeMahn is keeping Linus writing! Linus knows that the time is coming where his name will also be a household word!!!! TheeMahn's day is coming also! I can never see why anyone would want to follow another OS, that doesn't run correctly! Also wondering if there are any plans to get the shell extensions working again in Gnome? Far as have read, is supposed to be good to go again even for our 3.41 version. Is another thing am trying to work on is reigniting that! See what the outcome is. Think now that these processes are more orderly, shell extensions might just work again! Am a real sucker for Neroth's weather! Looked nice months ago as took on same qualities of theme! Great graphics and very functional! Anyway, if you have anymore suggestions to wipe that update of 3.2 out for me will be grinning!!! Still say this is what Ultimate is meant to be! Is no wonder everyone talked about that 3.6 Liquorix! Am betting everyone on that is seeing the same results I am!!!! Thanks for all the help and the motivation as always!!!!

Solved it for anyone that wants to know how to dump that old kernel here you go! System Tools > Preferences > Grub Customizer. Click on it enter your password. Once it opens scroll down to the kernel you desire to dump and delete it from the list. Go back into Ubuntu Tweak in Janitor and let it clean it out of there! Won't be no more 3.2 to update! Have some time and going to be figuring more things out! Will be back with more help! Let's stay on the cutting edge here!!! Next project is getting extensions to work! Only want one back that I liked on previous OS's. Unsure if I will get a success but will post if I do!

These ventures are real adventures!!! Been messing with that flashdrive and finally did get it to show kernel 3.7 is there! I also see all the files in the boot folder. Next trick is to get it to switch to it! Not seeing any real improvements on the boot and have removed quite a bit of startup processes for it! Down to maybe 5. Can't assume full control to get it to switch off with GUI. Is still sudo poweroff or reboot! Messed with the extensions and only got one more addition! Would be happy if I can get that weather one to work, but thus far no dice! All of it has no effect on Cinnamon, no change! Was thinking as both are so closely related maybe one of these efforts would have a good impact on it! Least with the 3.7 kernel I can stay with compiz while trying to get to Cinnamon. On the 3.2 had to shut down compiz! Absolutely love this kernel! Would not suggest it if it had problems. Only errors that were seen on install were a few missing files that are mostly out of date! Made in 2011. Has been major changes since then! As I originally said, "Linux likes to move all computers up, even the old!" Is just their style and of course they update old drivers all the time! So wasn't just me with Liquorix! Of course my sources list had getdeb in there and they are offline, so it didn't help! Reason I wrote that article!Looked up the others and were suffering from compiling problems. Sure was a bit of a gamble to take on this Exton one, but luckily like the person stated was done right! Hoping to succeed in these attempts pretty soon and get to putting some packages together. Will load Ultimate, change the kernel and proceed! Want to have them matching so know will work! Back to the fun! Am hoping, when I get a little more speed out of the flash will post! Will be great for other users to have a great and responsive system when using a flash! Have just a little studder with it right now, but am sure when finished won't be so noticeable! Lots of learning to happen while am out of school!!! Thanks for all your help, you know we all are going to succeed! I can feel it!!!!!

I'm running kernel 3.6.0.9 and had the same bizarre experience that Ubuntu Tweak would not remove the old 3.2... kernels, insisting I upgraded to 3.2.0.35. So I did, and it then allowed me to delete it! Go figure.

Yes it was crazy! Was easier to do as have listed above. No downloading is not bugging me for updates now, but when you open up the boot folder is one file left called initrd.img-3.2.0-31-generic.old-dkms. The rest is all the 3.7 exton kernel. I just don't like downloading things I won't use! Also am after some different things! Am hoping to accomplish a change on the flashdrive OS so a little experimentation has to be done as so far have no information on it! Also a more fun thing am after would be to accomplish changing kernels while still in the image. This way a user can just install the distribution with the new kernel! Would be great as to revive some older systems that were decent. Also to maintain our current distributions without the risks! Thanks PC Shot, some years back(seems like a lifetime) when I was in high school, I wanted to become a journalist or writer! Instead of pursuing College(as I should have) I decided to go into the Air Force. Didn't make it as an Electronics Warfare Specialist, but fortunately for me I went into administration! At the time, I thought was a low blow, but now am very grateful as it left me with about a 35wpm typing ability which is now awesome for dealing with computers!!! Also was trained on file structure, which also at times is an asset! Like we always say and hope to not to offend anyone "The Lord works in mysterious ways!" I truly believe in the supreme force and that our paths go a way for a reason! Simple words "Was just meant to be!" Am happy to be on the path I am now, is a very exciting time with all the great advances coming down for computers!. 12 years ago, computers and systems weren't able to to do half of what they can do now! Not saying were useless, but we have come a long way since then!!!! Looks like am not wining on the extensions in Gnome, not fully comprehending it, but do believe even if I did succeed would fail! I like Unity and compiz much more than the extensions! Besides when it comes down to it, all I wanted was the blasted weather one!!! Neroth had a real nice one! The other weather indicator is coming close to being dropped as its owner no longer feels like updating it! So far no success with 3.7 kernel as it is just not current enough(updated!) Always something, maybe will find a way around all this sometime! Is all I miss is a decent looking weather app! Everything else on Ultimate looks absolutely perfect! As always far exceeds all other OS's have ever tried! Those extensions were mostly ridiculous and all kinds of on/off switches kind of drove me batty anyway! Been there and as I said the only one ever used was the weather one! Maybe there's a way to fix it so can just put it on the current taskbar? Will check into it soon!

BBOSAK2143, there's weather plugins on the Avant Window Navigator and Cairo Dock if you choose to install one or the other. Believe AWN is already loaded on Ultimate Edition, but prety basic when compared to Cairo Dockbar. My personal favorite is Docky. It's lightweight and doesnt have known desktop specific dependencies like all other ones. All can be installed through synaptic and all have working weather apps and much more. Just have a look see, you may like...

Not knocking those utilities and are nice, but just want it in the taskbar so if I want to use it is there. Are days don't bother with it so much and days I do, but like to see it there on boot! As have said was the only extension Gnome had that I thought was worth anything! Most others were on the useless side to me! Messed around with Docky here and there is cool but opening windows gets in the way, if you don't set it right and I can never seem to find the right place on the screen to place it! I just like that small icon on the upper part of the taskbar sitting next to compiz showing the current temp. Click on it and gives a little description. Am sure others like that also, so have to find a way to get it to work! Just isn't happening at the moment! Gnome was insane with all those extensions and was just too much for it! I guess there is more of a handle on it now, but to be honest their whole setup is not as nice as what we are using here! Also along the way have lost Start Applications. Think messing with the Nooblabs did that, which also offshoots to updates uninstalling Cinnamon! Not that it is a big loss, since have to futz with it just to make it work, just a shame couldn't gain that extension. Haven't found and actually not sure what would be labeled for download as(Start Applications) but sure would like to get that back! If I can get a tar gz of Neroth's weather am going to get a good look at it and see about modifying it to get it in the taskbar. Worth a shot, but as have the laptop in pieces have to put that relic back together and try ZevenOS on it! Not cheap on that battery out here in the sticks!!! 6 and half bucks!!!! Oh well can't win them all!!! Also have an idea for that flash drive am going to try, so maybe in a few days will try for that Neroth tar gz. Never a dull moment on Linux!!!! Especially Ultimate since it gives you a chance to try things without self-destructing!!!! So if you have an idea how to get Start Applications back please let me know!!! Want to get my startup sound going again!!! Kind of miss that!!!

Have you looked at the weather keys and values in the gconf-editor? Path should be /schemas/apps/gweather/prefs, but i havent verified that. May be worth taking a look at...
