If you wish to try unity I reccommend Unity Black Opal. The Fear Factor is hard to clear up with nice words. Unity and Gnome3 are not especially something to fear, just counter intuitive.

Since we are here in 3.5 land, if you like KDE you could check that out too.

And now, the completely true facts, as told by an anonymous man hiding behind a screen name:

I agree with Xanayoshi...

using gnome 3 will make you feel, you are falling down a flight of stairs getting ready to brake some bones..
Gnome-classic is pretty decent and KDE is OK ............i'd recommend downloading and using the liquorix kernel (HOW TO section of this forum)for best results with compiz issues.

This is an unusually open and fair minded forum here where folk respect other folk's gui preferences. Decry unity on the ubuntu forum, for example, and you could be abused by staff and banned.

With Gnome 2 and fallback everything and anything anybody wanted to do could be found in one corner of the screen on rows of drop down menus.

On Unity you get less of a choice and most of that is effectively hidden through being scattered all around the, let's call it the desktop, and very few of the desktop shortcuts are unchanged.

It's more of a wtf is this ? factor than fear factor for me

Somebody tried to fix something that wasn't broke and look where it got them.
Change ain't what it used to be

It really boils down to a personal preference thing.
I see Unity as an attempt to move forward and progress. An attempt at something different. There are those who love it (me) and there are those who detest it (not me). There are also quite a few shades in between who are reserving their judgement.
Both sides of the argument have valid points of view and always will untill someone comes out with THE be all and end all environment.
When putting Black Opal together, I did also include Gnome Classic and Gnome Shell - just for those who aren't sold on Unity. This way I didn't run the risk of ripping something out that could potentially cripple the system down the track.
Ultimate Edition on the other hand, focused on Gnome as well as a few other environments that Black Opal didn't.
So, my suggestion is to have both on hand and try all the environments and see which one you prefer.

Cheers.
