Oh boy! Even though the kernel upgrade went well, installing the NVIDIA drivers did not. I used Jockey, then rebooted, and from what I gather the xserver would not start. I looked all over for a solution to get the GUI running again but nothing worked. So I reinstalled Ultimate Edition 3.5 then, using the process on
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8735, updated the kernel again (successfully). But in this process, I had to restart the computer after I ran this command apt-cache search liquorix to check the repos. After I rebooted the PC I ran the Upgrade Manager (which I think finnished installing some files), then I completed the rest of the kernel upgrade proccess successfully.
But instead of installing the video drivers after the kernal upgrade, I did it before the upgrade using this process:
- Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
- Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
- Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
This process did work for me. My pc build consists of a AMD Phenom II X4 973 CPU, a ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 770 AM3+ ATX AMD Motherboard, and a Galaxy Geforce GTS 450 1GB graphics card. But I had to reinstall the OS three times to get this far. And I am quite satisfied with the results. The KDE desktop is new to me but so far I find it very functional!
I know that Ultimate Edition 3.5 is still a new release, but what I was looking for was a way to update the kernel and the NVIDA video drivers without to much problem. But there are only bits and pieces of this process scattered even outside this forum. I was hopping I could find more answers here. The only thing I found out is that a person has to be persistent in the quest for searching for answers. I do thank everyone for their contributions and will most likely ask even more questions down the road!
