If you are wanting to drag a launcher from your menu left click and hold wait a second or 2 and drag it to your panel and drop.

Click the icon from the menus that you want on the panel and do not release the button (left click). Drag the icon to the right as if you are pulling it off the menu. Then, while still dragging it, just drop it on the panel up top and release the button. It should drop and stay on the panel.

Note: this is how you can do it in the Xfce desktop environment also, in case you ever use a distro with Xfce.

Even easier way. Left click the program you want and drag it to top panel. works in both Metacity and Compiz...

TheeMahn provided tips on customising the Gnome desktop, which were simple to follow - allowed me to get rid of one panel; move the top panel to the bottom; add launchers, move launchers etc. But can't for the life of me find it to provide the link! Thee or someone step in please.
